Integrating art into the classroom!

Art is the basic expression of the human mind and the creative reflection of the world we live in. Today we have realised that art has to be incorporated to make the learning process more interesting. Arts being integrated into the curriculum will prove beneficial for both the child as well as teachers in long run. As this century demands more of experiential learning than traditional learning as it makes children enjoy their subjects. Though we cannot move away from the fact that traditional learning is still the backbone of our educational system. Teachers are incorporating arts into the curriculum; they are increasingly integrating arts into the core subject areas. Art has the power to engage children in experiential learning so that children can learn more through the experience of their activity.

It should be promoted as stand-alone subjects as well as a cross curricular subject in all schools.

There are a couple of programmes which are designed to help arts integrate well into the classroom.

The Children Programmes plays a pivotal role as this is majorly designed to involve and inspire children. We need to start by encouraging children to participate and get involved in speaking like elocutions, extempore, debates. Even vocabulary can play a great role as having great word power works like an asset during delivering a speech or even during writing a script or content.

We must indulge children into art work like preparing collage on the topic they have studied. The artwork could illustrate anything related to their subjects. Through this artwork, it would help them explore their areas of interest and even help them understand their subject.

Encourage children to participate in drama. Asking them to involve in role playing as through this they would be able to understand a story character or event.

Involving children in activities like brochure, posture or advertisement making which help them with graphic skills and creative thinking.

Lastly, we must introduce children to artistic works that match their curriculum. Mythology and ancient stories throughout the century have inspired sculptures.

Teachers must be aware of various cultures across the globe including our nation. They must explore and be able to inculcate this amongst children. Art is an integral part so it cannot be skipped. Art must be appreciated by all.  Teachers should even come up with ideas, thoughts to improve art skills, so that children are able to understand the value and have a constant view of improving their art skills. As we move towards the century where arts will play a major role, let’s incorporate art into the teaching methodology.
